When were the first technical advances made?
How is the method called scientists using nowadays?
What does science affect?

TEXT 1
Science and technique have changed human life during the last hundred and fifty years more than it had been changed since man took to agriculture, and the changes continue at an increasing speed.
It is no paradox to say that the history of science begins with its prehistory.
The earliest efforts to understand and control nature took the form of magic but more important were the discoveries which began the long and difficult task of emancipating man from dependence on nature and his own muscular energy.
The first technical advances were made in the Nile Valley of Egypt where the development of measurement, the first steps of geometrical theory were worked out.
We cannot know the inventor of the wheel, or the inventor of the concept of abstract numbers without which neither reckoning nor the mathematical sciences would have been possible. But we know that prehistoric man contributed to the arts which were the forerunners of engineering.
Never before in history have there been rapid changes in our way of life as at the present moment. Scientists using what is called a “ scientific method” are making new discoveries overnight. Our homes, our food and clothing, our sources of power, our means of travel and communications, our health facilities as well as our amusement, hobbies and other leisure time activities, all are being affected by these discoveries.
Thousands of scientists using the most modern equipment are studying the atmosphere. Small laboratories packed with scientific instruments are being rocketed into space as Earth satellites.
Science affects our daily living. It is with us from the time we get up in the morning until we go to bed.

TEXT 2
1. What has brought about new requirements?
What are the advantages of flexible production lines?
What does such a factory have?
TEXT 2
Present-day industry, in particular engineering, is defined by the fact that its products -machine-tools, devices, instruments, etc.- are normally produced for a very short period of time and replaced by other more advanced products. The range of products is growing and the size of batches is decreasing. The new production environment has brought about new requirements. Thus ,for example, earlier functionally “ rigid” automatic production lines require considerable changes to be introduced or the line to be fully dismantled when the factory switches to a new product. Unlike the above lines, flexible production lines can be switched over to a new product virtually instantaneously. When operated on a 24-hour basis, these lines need only a minimal team of operators to attend the production.
A set of modules can be combined by a transport-and-storage system and a control system into a production line (or a production area). In Russia such lines form the basis for automated workshops capable of producing 100-250 parts of similar shape, size and requiring similar machining operations ( milling, cutting, drilling, etc.)
The highest level of a flexible production facility, an automatic factory, incorporates several flexible production workshops. Such a factory has both automated equipment and automated services , including computer-aided design of products and processes, and software development for its control systems. Such automated factories are being designed and are expected to become fully operational in the near future.

Australia
Australia is lying south-east of Asia, between the Pacific and Indian oceans. It is the world’s smallest continent which is almost completely surrounded by ocean expanses. Its total area is 7,682,300 sq.km.
The continent of Australia is divided into four general topographic regions: a low, sandy eastern coastal plain, the eastern highlands, the central plain, and the western plateau. Although Australia has a wide diversity of climatic conditions, the climate of Australia is generally warm and dry, with no extreme cold and little frost. It changes from comfortably mild in the south to hot in the central interior and north.
The total population in 1986 was about 16 mln people with the average population density of about 2 persons per sq. km. Most Australians are of British or Irish ancestry. More than 99% of the population speaks English.
The capital of Australia is Canberra. Australia has a federal parliamentary government. The Australian federation was formed on January1, 1901, from six former British colonies, which thereupon became states. The Australian constitution combines the traditions of British parliamentary monarchy with important elements of the US federal system. Powers of the federal government are enumerated and limited. The government consists of the British sovereign and the Australian Parliament.

Less than 1\4 of the territory of the country lies below the 200 m contour line. The South Island is significantly more mountainous than the North Island. New Zealand has temperate, moist ocean climate without marked seasonal variations in temperature or rainfall.
The total population in 1986 was about 3,3 mln people with the average population density of about 12 persons per sq. km. about 85% of the population is classified as Europeans.
